Well, you need a red filter for your camera, then you have to set your white balance manually, then attempt to focus on your subject (with a very small aperture) or use the autofocus and hope that it behaves itself, overexpose by a great deal of stops depending on your filter and take the picture (generally working on a tripod). You then have to switch red&blue channels in PS post process to get colour IR but you can convert to grayscale no problem. More comprehensive can be found here - [link] . :D
